Stephane Bonelli Erosion in Geomechanics Applied to Dams and Levees


Erosion is the most common cause of failures at earth-dams, dikes and levees, whether through overtopping and overflowing, or internal erosion and piping. This book is dedicated to the phenomenon of internal erosion and piping. It is not intended to be exhaustive on the subject, but brings together some of the latest international research and advances. Emphasis is placed on physical processes, how they can be studied in the laboratory, and how test results can be applied to levees and dams. The results from several research projects in Australia, France, the Netherlands and the United States are covered by the authors. Our aim has been to share our most recent findings with students, researchers and practitioners. About the Authors Stéphane Bonelli is a Research Professor at Irstea (French Environmental Sciences and Technologies Research Institute) in Aix-en-Provence, France. He has over 20 years of teaching and research experience, and has been a member of the ICOLD (International Commission on Large Dams) European Working Group on Internal Erosion since 2005. He has participated in 19 large dam reviews in France (visual inspection, monitoring data analysis and numerical modeling). His current activities include research, teaching and consultancy, focusing on soil erosion and the processes of levee breach.

Nearing Mark Handbook of Erosion Modelling


The movement of sediment and associated pollutants over the landscape and into water bodies is of increasing concern with respect to pollution control, prevention of muddy floods and environmental protection. In addition, the loss of soil on site has implications for declining agricultural productivity, loss of biodiversity and decreased amenity and landscape value. The fate of sediment and the conservation of soil are important issues for land managers and decision-makers. In developing appropriate policies and solutions, managers and researchers are making greater use of erosion models to characterise the processes of erosion and their interaction with the landscape. A study of erosion requires one to think in terms of microseconds to understand the mechanics of impact of a single raindrop on a soil surface, while landscapes form over periods of thousands of years. These processes operate on scales of millimetres for single raindrops to mega-metres for continents. Erosion modelling thus covers quite a lot of ground. This book introduces the conceptual and mathematical frameworks used to formulate models of soil erosion and uses case studies to show how models are applied to a variety of purposes at a range of spatial and temporal scales. The aim is to provide land managers and others with the tools required to select a model appropriate to the type and scale of erosion problem, to show what users can expect in terms of accuracy of model predictions and to provide an appreciation of both the advantages and limitations of models. Problems covered include those arising from agriculture, the construction industry, pollution and climatic change and range in scale from farms to small and large catchments. The book will also be useful to students and research scientists as an up-to-date review of the state-of-art of erosion modelling and, through a knowledge of how models are used in practice, in highlighting the gaps in knowledge that need to be filled in order to develop even better models.

Alain Sellier Swelling Concrete in Dams and Hydraulic Structures. DSC 2017


The swelling of concrete is a major concern for the owners and operators of dams and hydraulic structures. Faced with irreversible movement of their dams or with observations of cracking processes, operators need to explain the phenomena observed in order to justify safety conditions and in some cases to plan remedial works. Over the last 20 years, active research has been carried out in the field, resulting in practical results in phenomena interpretation and dam modeling. At the same time, an increasing number of affected dams have undergone safety re-evaluations and in some cases remedial work. Several of them have been removed altogether. Although it remains difficult to establish a “state of the art” in this domain due to the rapidly changing context, regular international exchanges in the field appear fruitful and necessary. Following on from previous conferences in the field organized by Robin Charlwood, former President of the ICOLD Concrete Committee, the initiative was taken by EDF and Toulouse University-LMDC to organize a workshop to provide a new opportunity for sharing experience. The aim of this workshop is to assemble active researchers, leading engineers, and experts from the practicing community and administration interested directly or indirectly in concrete swelling effects in dams and hydraulic structures. All types of chemical expansion phenomena, including those due to alkali aggregate reactions and those due to ettringite formation, are addressed. These proceedings include 24 papers written by experts renowned in their field, illustrating the need to progress with interdisciplinary approaches.

Hussein Chlaib Geophysical Applications for Levee Assessment


Levees are important engineering structures that are built along the rivers to protect human lives and shield the communities as well as agricultural lands from high water events. Animal burrows, subsurface cavities, and low density (high permeability) zones are weaknesses within the levee body that increase its risk of failure. To prevent such failures, continuous monitoring of the structural integrity and early detection of weaknesses in the levee should be conducted. The Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and the Capacitively Coupled Resistivity (CCR) methods were examined to detect the previous problems. Also, studying the capability and the effectiveness of these methods in levee monitoring, subsurface weakness detection, and studying the structure integrity of levees were the main tasks of this work. A set of laboratory experiments and a comprehensive field work in three levees were conducted to achieve the work goals. The GPR was effective to detect the cavities and the animal burrows as well as the low compaction areas. The CCR was less effective in detecting animal burrows and other small anomalies due to the nature of the method.

In modern industrial world, engineering components are prone to more rapid surface degradation such as erosion-corrosion, overheating, wear, solid particle abrasion, high temperature corrosion, etc. Due to above surface degradation, major problems causes tube wall thinning, results in premature failure of the super heater and reheater tubes. Alloys used at high temperature should possess good mechanical properties along with erosion - corrosion resistance. The present study behavior of boiler steel ASTM-SA213 T-22 (used in most of the power plants in the Northern India) has been investigated for high temperature erosion-corrosion behavior in the uncoated as well as coated condition. Detonation Gun thermal spraying process was used for coating on boiler steel. SEM/EDAX, XRD and X-ray mapping analysis done to reveal the microstructure and compositional features of boiler steel. The microstructure indicates uniform and dense coating. Thermogravimetric techniques is used to investigate the erosion-corrosion behavior at 900ºC for 1000 hours. SEM/EDAX, XRD and X-ray mapping techniques were used to analyze the corrosion products.

River engineering works are aimed at the control of the water and sediment discharges, bank erosion, channel depth, floodplain area and water quality. This control can be achieved by the use of various structures, used alone or in a combined way, such as check dams, reservoirs, levees and floodwalls, locks, bank revetments, channel contraction and other control works. The choice of the most adequate river engineering work is not straightforward and can then be made only after careful hydraulic, economic, social and environmental analyses. The river engineering structures, if not properly designed and built, can cause opposite effects to those expected during the design phase. Infact, structures are often selected and installed without an understanding of the sediment transport processes, thus violating the dimension, pattern and profile of the stable river. This book reports the results of a research work, aimed at the study of the check dam operation, with particular emphasis to the filling process.

In this study we propose a method to minimize or avoid architecture erosion. It is based on the concept of architecture vision that is the ideal representation of the architecture of the software in hand. All the activities of this method revolve around the efforts to keep the architecture of the software aligned with an architecture vision. The iterative nature of the method and synchronization of the implemented architecture with the architecture vision helps to detect and reduce architecture erosion. This method does not conflict with or replaces any development or management process or method (like RUP, agile, water fall etc), but exists parallel to them.

According to Feansile (2006), the construction of "hydroelectric dams represents major investments and major sources of environmental and social impacts" (p.16). Rolando Javellonar and Victorino Taylan Rice Straw Geotextile as Ground Cover for Soil Erosion Mitigation


Results of simulation revealed that the main effects of slope gradient and geotextile on the different parameters investigated were found to be highly significant. Regardless of the intensity of rainfall applied, significantly higher sediment concentration, sediment yield and soil erosion were observed at slope gradient of 35 degrees. Except for sediment yield, lowest sediment concentration and soil erosion were noted at the lowest slope gradient of 10 degrees. On the other hand, the different geotextiles used as ground cover greatly affected all the parameters being evaluated. Irrespective of rainfall intensity, all the geotextiles tested had significantly lower sediment concentration, sediment yield and soil loss as compared with NGC. Generally, the relationships of slope gradient versus sediment concentration, sediment yield and soil erosion were found to be nonlinear. At any given level of rainfall intensity, the three indicators increased correspondingly as the slope was increased from 10 to 35 degrees and then declined when the slope was further increased from 35 to 60 degrees.
